Points to Improve for The Wedding Singer

It’s always nice to watch a preview and/or an opening night of a show which barely has flaws. It shows how the production maximizes their preparations. For The Wedding Singer, I only have two points to raise: PUSH and PULL

PUSH. I believe Iya Villania can do more than that. Her voice suits her role (and blends well with Gian Magdangal’s superb voice), but she just needs to push more or else she’ll lose her voice before the end of the run. As my voice coach always say “push, add force, support the diaphragm and you’ll be more comfortable with your high notes.” Aside from this, Iya is a good choice to play Julia Sullivan.

Listen how well their voices blend

PULL. The energy of the cast is just contagious! You just want to get up, dance with them and have fun. I just hope they’ll pull back just a liiiiiittle energy for scenes which should focus on the leads. There are moments when too much energy distracts the essence of a particular scene.

This is my current LSS. Everything about this spells F-U-N!

Although the material has a lot of unnecessary fillers, it's fun watching a great cast enjoying their work. And oh, Gian Magdangal is a great choice to play Robbie Hart: very clean voice, good audience connection and commendable acting.

Official review will come out after I watch the play again on the 30th.

  1. hahaha OMG. So I think nakulangan pa ako sa energy nila. Another thing they need to fix, the sound system. The Mic always fails.

  2. Hey Jori!

Wasn't able to say goodbye to you after the preview. I needed to rush eh. :-) Anyway, I think bumababa yung energy during the fillers. Ang daming fillers nung story, yung mga unnecessary scenes na kahit wala, the story can still stand on its own. Yeah, I have problems din with the sound system.t. :-)

Oh by the way, I got your email invite. I'm not yet sure if I can go there. Maybe next time. Thanks. See you again soon!

    :-)

  4. The material is always independent from the direction of the director. I simply believe that Mr. Robbie Guevara squeezed the best from the material. It didn't fail to make me laugh, it completed my saturday night!

  5. Pierre,

    Yup! Couldn't agree more. :)

  6. I think the material is poorly adopted to stage musical version. Unlike all other movie to broadway titles, The Wedding Singer has a lot of filler scenes. I think the show could be much better if it is just in a one act run like Xanadu.

  7. Jori,

OMG! You have read my mind! I wrote that in my "official" review for TWS. I felt like the writer squeezed in too much fillers just to make it a two-act musical.
